Very high turnover, manipulates ratings, bullies.

I tend to ignore post like these, especially when it allows people to comment anonymously but I had to take a moment to disagree. Principal Hope and the high standards she has set for P.S. 11 are life changing. Prior to coming to P.S. 11 I had absolutely no hope in the public school system. As a first-generation American I envisioned using teaching to elevate the black and brown community. I entered fresh out of college with this drive to change the world, one class at a time. That dream was quickly shattered when I learned that there are so many teachers who take up this occupation because they can mold it around their personal lives only. I witnessed too many teachers treat this job as a job – not a calling or career. I sat in teacher lounges hearing the negative comments made by teachers about teachers and other students on a daily basis. It seemed like public school teaching culture was about complaining and doing the bare minimum.

P.S. 11 was my third school and is my forever school. Principal Hope’s office door is ALWAYS open. It was the first time I had a principal take time out of their busy schedule to sit with me to plan and help me execute high-level lessons. I wasn’t just told what to do but showed how to with patience. I truly learned the meaning of all decisions being made based on what benefits students – not teachers, politicians, parents, rating, etc. P.S. 11 is a hub of greatness that is poured in every single child that walks through our doors.

Yes, there is high turnover but it is solely because some teachers come into the school expecting to do the bare minimum. They can not keep up with being held to high standards and lack understanding of what this career truly entails. There are so many public schools with great mantras and slogans that look great on paper but aren’t practiced. At P.S. 11, under Ms. Hope, our scholars are thoroughly trained to be world changers and critical thinkers and it starts from above, trickling down through us teachers and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
